Staying hydrated is very important for our health, but did you know lemon water can have even more benefits.

It can be hard to stay hydrated, especially during the hotter summer months. If you don’t like drinking plain water you could always try adding some lemon to give it a bit of taste. What’s even better is that lemon water actually has plenty of health benefits too.

1/ Reduces bloating

If you have been quite bloated lately but can’t find a way to ease it, why not try lemon water? Jodi Greebel, MS, RDN, a certified nutritionist consultant with Citrition explains ‘Lemon water decreases bloating because it acts as a diuretic which actually helps when you are retaining fluids,’

2/ May boost the immune system

Are you the type of person who catches every single bug or cold that’s floating around? Then try adding lemon water to your diet. Indeed Alicia Galvin, RD, a resident dietitian to Sovereign Laboratories explains the properties of lemons:

One lemon provides about 20 milligrams of vitamin C, which is about 20% of the daily recommended amount, vitamin C is helpful for the immune system and acts as an antioxidant.

3/ Reduces the risk of kidney stones

Kidney stones are painful and more common than people think. According to 2012 research published in the journal European Urology, an estimated 8.8% of adults in the US will experience kidney stones in their lifetime.

According to Galvin, depending on the type of kidney stones you have lemon water could help ‘break up the stones and dissolve them’. Lemon water can be effective against oxalate kidney stones.

4/ Can improve digestion

If you experience digestive problems and are looking for a simple at-home remedy then simply adding some lemon to your water can help. According to Trista Best, RD, a dietitian for Balance One Supplements, ‘Drinking lemon water in the morning acts as a laxative when you drink it warmed,’

5/ Makes skin healthier

Lemon water can also have positive effects on your skin. It is the vitamin C found in lemons that will help your skin have that glow you’re after. A review of research in 2017 published by Nutrients explains that vitamin C in lemons promotes collagen synthesis which can give you a youthful appearance over time.
