Damian would wait downstairs until his missus had nodded off because his snoring was so bad – but since losing weight on Slimming World she now says she ‘has the man back she married’, Damian says losing weight has really benefited his relationship with son Mylo.
The 38-year-old is an HR insights manager from Lytham St Annes, Lancashire, where he lives with his wife, Jo, and their son, Mylo, seven. Damian is a target member of Ian Hartup’s Slimming World group in Lytham St Annes.
Below, in his own words, he reveals how he lost an astonishing 12st 2lbs in less than two years – going from a starting weight of 28st 9lbs to 16st 7lbs…
From outdoor adventures with his son to running the marathons, losing more than 12st means Damian Murray enjoys life again.
At over 28st, my energy is at rock bottom – and so is my self-esteem. Staying home with my son Mylo is easier than going to the park, where I feel out of place alongside the active dads. In my early 30s, I was worrying about my weight, and the more I felt hopeless about my size, the more I comforted myself with food.
I feel like there’s a gap appearing between my wife, Jo, and me. Instead of heading to bed together, we’ve come up with an arrangement that works around my snoring. I wait downstairs until she’s nodded off, then creep into the bed. I know this isn’t how I want things to be.
I’ve just found out I could be running next year’s London Marathon – and I can’t believe I’ve got myself into it. I told myself there was no way I’d actually be selected. I couldn’t stop fretting that my name could be drawn. Jo suggested I join Slimming World and lose some weight first. I didn’t want to go, but looking at Jo and Mylo, I didn’t want things to stay as they were either. I get breathless from walking short distances, so thinking about running seems impossible. I’m going to give it a try and see what happens.
I’ve received an award at my group for having shed more than 3st in six weeks. On my first evening the Consultant, Ian, told me how the plan worked, and it sounded easier than I’d expected – I couldn’t wait to get started! I chatted to the other members and they were really friendly. Jo and I threw ourselves into a new way of eating.
I’d been having four rounds of buttered toast for breakfast, and a sandwich with crisps for lunch. Before I joined Slimming World, dinner was fajitas with cheese, and I snacked before bed. Now, Jo and I are trying out Slimming World recipes like Cajun chicken pasta made with plain quark. I had a filling breakfast of plain oats with fat-free natural Greek yogurt and fruit. I took a tuna salad to work, and healthier snack options such as rice cakes instead.
I’ve been for my first run in years – it was so hard! I’ve been using an exercise bike to build up my fitness. When I got back home, I was sweating and wheezing, but I didn’t mind – I felt invigorated and proud of myself.
Mylo and I are having a father-and-son day out – an active one. I can’t remember the last time we did this. From the moment I saw his face beaming, I felt prouder than I have in ages.
It dawned on me how much more confident and energetic I’d become since I started losing weight – and how that it is benefiting Mylo too.
Jo and I have found each other again. We exercise together and we share delicious, filling Slimming World meals together every day, such as our home-made chilli with rice. And best of all, we now go to bed together because my snoring has disappeared, along with the 9½st I’ve lost.
I did it – I ran the hottest London Marathon on record! The marathon was a colossal slog. The heat was sapping my strength after 16 miles and during the final seven miles I wasn’t sure I could carry on.
