At 21, Uways Pervez from Banbury dropped 8st 1½lbs all in 9 months after joining Slimming World. He now serves as a role model to his patients.
“I’d been large most of my life and always been bigger than my friends, but when I started studying nursing at university in 2012 I lived off takeaways and felt I didn’t have time to exercise, so more weight soon piled on.”
He easily tires and lacks the energy to do things before joining the program. He’s a nurse and his job entails physical strain, standing for long hours, going here and there, especially on top of his studies. He knew that it was his weight that was causing the problem. There was that one moment where he attended a seminar about a condition that affects people who are underweight and his friend joked that he doesn’t have to worry developing such condition because he was fat. He didn’t know how to react.
“I was determined to set a better example as a health professional, so I visited my GP for advice, who referred me to Slimming World for 12 weeks. ”
He was nervous at first because he’s a young man and he thought that Slimming World was only for women. But soon enough his worries vanished because everyone was friendly and his consultant, Jenny, eased his anxiety away.
“I was surprised at how easy I found it to fit healthy eating into my busy routine and how affordable eating the Slimming World way is too – especially on a student’s wage”, he said.
He doesn’t wear baggy clothes anymore and his friends noticed that he’s more confident.
I have so much more energy at work too, moving patients is easier and I don’t feel self-conscious about raising the issue of weight with patients now either. I know more than anyone what it feels like to be unhappy and ashamed of your size, and I think that understanding helps me to approach the subject in a more sensitive manner – plus I can tell patients all about Slimming World, too.”
